The EPA has announced National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week for October 24-30th in order to raise awareness of the risks associated with childhood lead exposure. According to recent statistics,

Lead paint poisoning affects more than 1 million children today. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that nearly 250,000 children living in the United States have blood lead levels high enough to require public health intervention, based on data from a 2003–2004 national survey.
